Mountaineers

Wild and Wonderful West Virginia

Good ole' WV lives up to its name again. Here we stayed at Tygart lake state park near the small town of Grafton WV. The wildlife was not in short supply.  We even had some pretty intense scuffles with a few pesky raccoons.

We settled our campsite on a hill above the bathhouse.  The hills were not kind to my ankle, but we made the best of it.  We took the black and settled in for a nights watch.  (Watching for raccoons mostly.)

Unfortunately the beach and kayak rental office were closed, but this ended up working in our favor.  We found a reasonable trail to hike down to the lake and a secluded swimming area.  The water was crystal clear and only a little chilly.  The pictures below, as usual, do not do the lake justice.

After our swim, we got showered up and headed into Morgantown for dinner and sight seeing.  Kelly recommended a place called Black Bear Burrito for dinner and it was perfect!  The queso would be best served with a spoon.

Picked up this cool shirt too!  Sorry Janice & Tiffany...when in Rome?

Grafton is a faded railroad town that has had severe highs and lows in terms of economic success.  In the 1850's it experienced a boom as it became a hub for building the transatlantic railway.  The civil war fueled the prominence of Grafton, and factories moved into the area.  In the 1950's the factories moved out and many people faced unemployment.  Grafton experienced a short resurgence in 1960 when a doll manufacturer moved in to the area.  Ultimately the town was left in heartbreaking disillusionment by the very same railroad that brought the town such success over 100 years prior.  In the early 80's, the railway relocated many jobs and resources to Florida, leaving the town quite poor.

We headed back to our campsite in time for a beautiful sunset over Lake Tygart.  Almost heaven.
